How long have you been in your profession?
I changed careers in 2015, after 22 years doing engineering projects in the energy and renewables field.
What attracted you to the profession?
I was looking for something that would let me use my physics degree more. I ended up starting as a patent technical assistant almost by accident, but I quickly found the mix of science and law was something I enjoyed and decided to stick with it.
What are you most passionate about in your role?
I enjoy getting to understand new technologies, but I particularly enjoy seeing a patent all the way from invention disclosure to being granted, especially when it is clear how important it is to the client.
What is the most important aspect of Intellectual Property when it comes to our clients?
IP can seem a bit abstract, people should think about what ideas and technology they have created and how important they are to them, and then go to an IP professional to help understand how that can be protected before they release them to the world.
What does your team say about you?
Nat’s extensive knowledge, talent, enthusiasm and good humour have made him an ideal new recruit to the Pure Ideas team. We’re delighted to have him on board!
What are your interests outside work?
My main thing is playing music, I’ve played guitar for many years, and fiddle now and then, I even tried learning trombone once. Nothing serious, but I do enjoy a jam night or an open mic. I also like just getting out in the countryside for walks, especially with a dog. I live by the Peak District so I’m quite spoiled for good walks.
Tell us a fact that none of your work colleagues knows.
I once had to rescue the radioactive materials from the science labs in a school that was being demolished, as the contractors all stopped work when they found them. I rehomed them at a local sixth form college while barely complying with the relevant radioactive waste regulations. An early combination of science and law!
